They are connected with cheap plastic that bends open when you pull on the strings. It works great for my son to keep his face shaded but I do not like having to reattach the straps every few minutes.My son will be 3 years old in a month and the hat fit a little snug on him, super cute, good material and I love that it stays on with the adjustable string under the chin.Cute hat that is true to size. My grandson hates hats but will keep this one on. We use it when we’re out on the boatAs soon as I received it, the strap just ripped off the side of the hat. Poorly made.
